I spent nearly the whole day doing mom-stuff. First I went to the indoor pool (it's heated with salt water, for arthritic and handicapped people) and watched D's swimming lesson, then I went to the campus art supply store and got stuff for Saturday's party (crafts and other supplies related to the party games). Then I made arrangements with B., my mom, and my sister for Sunday's noon party. Then I picked him up from EEI and did afternoon mom-things, including comforting him when he had his first experience of sentimentality bringing tears, which he found quite unsettling.
Eventually came bedtime and yet another in a series of long recent discussions about the improbability of dying very young, the (apparent) desirability of immortality, and the wish for certainty and control over anxiety. I think we finally got to the root of it, though - he's been having dreams about the Urghal in Eragon. So I had him picture the actors in the Urghal masks, how they're regular guys, some of them daddies, and like to watch sports on TV, and some days they go to work and get to have fun putting on these costumes and going "URRR" and chasing around, and then the director says "Cut!" and they take off the masks and complain about how very sweaty they are, and the Eragon-actor teases them because he didn't have to wear a sweaty mask. This got some good laughs, and with luck he's on his way to sleep.
So the thing that's really stressing me is that we invited 12 kids to the party, and although the two in the neighborhood can come, only one of the others has RSVP'ed yet, and she can't come because they're going camping. I mean, the party is less than 40 hours away, and 9 out of 12 kids have not RSVP'ed yet! We've had most of them at previous parties, and they did RSVP for those, so I'm worried that maybe all of these families are camping or travelling and that we'll only have two kids come to the party!
