Summer vacation 2007.2: Fourth of July
Jul. 4th, 2007 11:55 pmAfter R&D came back from watering the nursery, we did a barbecue: grilled buffalo burgers, watermelon, and nacho doritos. During D's rest, I then installed Warcraft III on my laptop, and
fractal9091 introduced me to this fun new game, which is a lot like Age of Empires or Age of Mythology but with nicer art. We didn't get far in our LAN games, though - his computer crashed 37 minutes into the first game, then his battery gave out 20 minutes into the second.
Eventually we went to my mom's for her Fourth of July party, at which she was inexplicably serving pizza, but it was from Bene, so at least it was tasty, if not very all-American. We set up the picnic table in the back yard - it was in the upper 80s with a breeze outside, which felt much cooler than the 80ish stagnant air in her dining room. After dinner, D. and
fractal9091 and my brother-in-law S. played Monkey in the Middle 'til D. was completely dripping with sweat. Then we came home, and D. watched
fractal9091 play Kingdom Hearts until it was dark enough for the fireworks.
The fireworks were really flashy and fun! From time to time, there were aerials in the south and the west, and our neighbors just north of us were doing some bottle rockets and ground fireworks that were often a bit fancier than ours. Some people had this kind that would spin on the ground a bit then leap into the air and bounce around! D. did better with the noise than last year (when he ended up watching from inside). Afterwards,
fractal9091 and I went on a walk to try to see more aerial ones, but we probably would have done better to stay and watch the neighbors. When we got home, we watched the first episode of the BBC Robin Hood series, which as R. noted was rather in the Xena style.
