Today I talked with Mark Johnson (as in Lakoff & Johnson) for a whole hour. He was interested in my projects and helped me think about which philosophy classes I might take for my supporting area requirement. Rather than doing a reading on wonder, I will probably want to look more broadly at "moralization" - the process whereby individuals or a society extend their ethical concern to new domains.

I might take Johnson's seminar on ethical naturalism in the fall, and then maybe a different class in winter; I'll e-mail some of the other faculty to ask for details on their plans. I'm leaning towards Beata Stawarska's class on the "dialogic tradition," but Cheney Ryan's class on social and political philosophy sounds good too.

Added: Oh yeah. Today we finally pried the state's fingers off our 2005 tax refund - or at least, today the check arrived. This is after numerous letters (all of which they managed to lose), two rounds of faxing receipts (they lost the first but found the second), and a conference call with a tax magistrate. Lesson (duh): Always fill in your kid's name on the form if you want the working families tax credit!
