We let D. go to his friend's Halloween party even with a fever of 101-102F -- I hope the other kids' parents won't come to hate us in the next few days. I just couldn't bear to disappoint him by keeping him home, especially as he will probably miss the school party tomorrow, and rationalized it by telling myself that all the kids will be exposed to whatever's going around anyway. I still feel badly about it, though, and he did way more running around than he should have, so now I'm all a-fret.

While they were gone I did the GRE verbal practices and discovered three bad habits. For the vocabulary ones, I just skimmed the answers 'til I found a good fit, rather than reading them all properly (didn't cost me anything, but it could). Also, I used only half the allotted time, at most, which wasn't really smart. Then I discovered that I was doing all my thinking aloud, which I do when I'm nervous or want to be conscientious, and that's probably not desirable either, but it felt awkward to be quiet. Hmm.

Tonight we carved pumpkins. Pumpkin guts make my skin itch. D. had to try multiple times to draw a carvable face onto his, and we learned that bon ami will "erase" indelible ink from a pumpkin surface. Our results:
