Thinking for oneself

I'm going to be lazy and quote last year's tribute to her: "Daughter, sister-in-law, and aunt to the Renaissance kings of France, she thought for herself in a time when doing so could get you thrown into prison, denied access to your children, and terrorized in your home by the royal army, even if you were a princess. Go Renée." (Why do I know and care? Let us just say I had unusual hobbies as a teenager.)
