Today I read Issola, the concluding book in Brust's Vlad Taltos series. The chapter headings were terribly amusing, and I made a note to myself to be sure and post about them in my LJ. They were as if the current adventure were being annotated as a treatise on etiquette: "Courtesy Towards Inanimate Objects"; "Disagreements with Deities." Then I finished the book. ( Spoilers..." )
I thought about going to hear Marcus Borg speak today, but it was a two-lectures-plus-dinner event, and I was only interested in one of the topics: two types of Christianity, one focused on achieving otherworldly salvation, and one focused on personal transformation and social justice in this life. Borg is a leading scholar in reconstructing the "authentic" words of Jesus. Although I much prefer their conclusions to most other interpretations of Jesus's teachings, I have to admit that I find their thinking more than a little circular (it's true because Jesus said it, and we know that Jesus said it -- and not other stuff -- because it rings true and is consistent with the other things we've decided must be true). Hmm.
We had fun making Valentines for D's preschool classmates -- pink hearts glued onto white paper snowflakes with big red circles for backing, plus cutouts of the kids' names printed in a fancy font using red ink.
