Friday -- a rather foggy day, good for staying in, which is what we mostly did. We barely made it out of the house in time to pick up D. at 1 p.m. with a stop at the video store on the way, then during D's so-called "nap" we pretty much just read Falco novels. I finished mine and started the first chapter of Yendi. In the late afternoon, R. kindly took D. to a birthday party at Papa's Pizza for one of D's Kindermusik friends, and J. and I had a couple of hours to go out again. We visited my mom, who was quite interested in hearing about last night's Harryhausen movie, as it was filmed in Italy during a period when Arnold had lived there. (She also quite liked science fiction when I was a girl, so perhaps she'd enjoy the movie for more than the scenes of Rome and Sicily in the 1950s?).
Next, we took a look at the rather stagnant state of Tugman Creek, all full of duckweed and slimy algae. Part of my plan for our vacation this year was to have fun taking pictures of the butterflies, dragonflies, and birds in the creek, like I did back on July 12, but having the vacation move from August to October pretty much put a stop to that idea. Maybe next year. I did like the way the water looked, though:

We then went to Mazzi's and ordered some spaghetti and salad (guess who got which? Right -- spaghetti for J. and both for me!), and took a walk on the running trail while waiting:

We brought the food home, and J. explained the rules of my new game, Settlers of Catan, and we had so much fun playing it. At least I did -- I won! And I rolled a 7 so many times it was ridiculous. J. knew it was just the kind of game for me -- beautiful to look at, but with the competition played out in development, not battles. D. enjoyed watching the game when he got back from the birthday party. After he was in bed, J. and I watched Apollo 13, which still makes me teary with relief at the end, followed by assorted cartoons and the last half hour of Young Einstein.
Today -- hiking in the woods, I hope! But only if I get up soon.
