I have a policy of not encouraging door-to-door solicitors, unless they're kids from the neighborhood, but I wondered if this Chris would appreciate the irony that I didn't want to talk to him because I was impatient to get back to reading the Edward Abbey essay lamenting the damming of Glen Canyon.

Why do women make such wussy wagers in Jeopardy? It's practically a rule that they won't bet enough when it counts. Think of Leslie the Spanish teacher from Hayward, in that million dollar tournament. Tonight, an Anne would have gone on to the tournament of champions finals if she'd bet just $2 on her Final Jeopardy answer. (I wonder if that was the first time a Final Jeopardy answer was a person I'd met? Lawrence Ferlinghetti used to shop at the remainder book company in Berkeley that I worked at.)

We finally got the weather they'd been promising all weekend -- clear and 79. Nice walk this evening at sunset. Lots and lots of crickets in the upper meadow at Tugman Park, and a bird in the little grove of ash trees by the road, calling "tsu tsu."
