Un fils francophone?
Sep. 6th, 2004 08:52 pmWhile we were at the playground today, we ran into one of David's preschool friends, who's starting kindergarten at the French immersion school tomorrow. I hadn't really given this option much thought, other than the comment I made back in May that it's at a stunningly beautiful location, and some regrets that several his closest friends from preschool are expected to go there (two tomorrow and one next year). The idea of having one's child taught some subjects entirely in another language -- one that has no anticipated practical value in their life -- strikes me as a bit too yuppie. However, I'm giving it some second thoughts now, since, after all, one of the most important things for smart children in elementary school is to make sure they aren't too bored from already knowing too much more than their classmates. D. has been sounding out words since he was three and a half, and some children start kindergarten not even knowing the alphabet! So maybe there's some point in being sure he'll have something new to learn. He likes learning French phrases and songs already. Hmm. Have to decide in February or so. (Note to readers: It's a public school, and students can attend any school in the district that isn't full. We also have Spanish and Japanese immersion schools, but they're not in our neighborhood.)
