Today was the first instance of Friday being my "work on papers" day. It was fun and productive. First I went to the office, then I was going to get some soup in the EMU, but the Holy Cow restaurant there was closed for the Country Fair (a major counterculture event, held in a big forest/meadow west of Eugene), so I crossed campus to get some Japanese soup instead. On the way, I saw SG, who was taking a lunch break, and we talked about cooking with kids while we walked. I quite like SG and DO, his wife. She's a professor of German lit, and he's the director of an institute that, if I remember correctly, has to do with microproperties of surfaces interacting with biological tissues? Both at the UO.

Next, I was examining a poster for an event called the Faerieworlds Festival and was spotted by Tarik, who'd been in my stat classes two years ago and who worked at ORI for a while. We'd started an interesting conversation on beliefs and "isms" in the copy room one day but haven't had time to continue it yet. Finally I got the soup and returned to the EMU and sat alone in the dining hall with the big windows that look out onto beautiful liquidambars (that's what we call sweetgum trees when we're married to horticulturists). And I work-work-worked on an outline.

Then I headed home, but on the way I stopped at the Madison Meadow, which people are trying to save from development. It's partly an abandoned orchard; I recognized filbert and cherry trees. I watched a painted lady butterfly for a while, and then saw a big dragonfly, probably a twelve-spotted skimmer like I photographed in our yard last year. And when I got home, there was a great big red dragonfly, but I didn't find it to take its picture. Then I work-work-worked here at the computer, and then walked down to the park to meet up with K&D.

Twelve-spotted skimmer I photographed a year ago tomorrow:

R's daylily convention is this weekend. Next weekend, there's an archaeology film festival, which I'd love to attend, but I'm afraid it probably overlaps too much with DH's visit.
