So as I mentioned yesterday, D’s jazz band went on a 7.5-hour bus trip to a big jazz festival in Idaho. They’re staying in a hotel in Pullman, Washington, 20 minutes away. The schedule they gave us in the fall said that they’d be performing in the daytime, and if chosen for the special Young Artists concert, they’d also be performing at 4:30 p.m. I looked online and found that this special concert is live-streamed.

I waited until after 4 p.m. for D. to let me know one way or the other as to whether they’d be in this special concert, but I didn’t hear from him. I looked online, and it said that the schools would be announced by the MC. So I turned on the live stream and started watching. At 4:30 p.m. the MC announced the first six schools that had been chosen. Our school was on the list! It was the fourth school announced! I shrieked and jumped up and down. I called R. and told him how to watch. I posted to Facebook to tell R’s parents and sister. I called J, who was up in a different part of Washington, and told him how to listen while driving. I went up the street and told Mateo’s dad how to watch, Mateo also being in the jazz band. I went back to the computer and settled down for the exciting concert.

At 5 p.m. the Univ. of Idaho band was still playing, and the MC said that only one of the six chosen schools had checked in. They announced the five schools they were still waiting for… and ours was on the list. I thought, uh oh, and remembered that his teacher e-mailed us with his cell phone number. I called him and told him they were waiting for the band to check in. He was flustered. He was going to go call all the kids and collect them together, and we got off the phone.

I called R. and told him there was a delay, but he was going out to see a play anyway. As I got off the phone, D’s teacher called me back – as it happened, they had already gone all the way back to the hotel! I updated Facebook and tried to tell Mateo’s dad. I sat there and watched the live stream of all the other schools. It was a really high quality stream with lots of close-ups, and I think they post the videos to their website afterwards. At the end, they had a drawing for big prizes, for which the director must be present to win. D’s teacher was one of the names drawn. It wasn’t clear, but I think they would have won a musical instrument.

So, that was pretty frustrating. I understand that the band teacher was expecting to see the notification online, and that maybe it’s the first year he went to this jazz festival, and he didn’t know that they were all expected to go to this big final concert to hear the announcements in person. However, if you’ve driven 7.5 hours to go to an event, why not stick around all day for the big finale? Seriously.
