Where are you in your dreams?

Velleman's paper on virtual characters included this note:
In a world like Second Life, players occupy a position slightly behind and above their avatars, so that their avatars' bodies are within their field of view. I think it is not accidental that this perspective corresponds to one that is sometimes experienced in dreams.
Really? I realize that I don't know enough about other people's experience in dreams. Mine are all first-person: I'm in the dream, doing stuff, "looking out of my eyes" like I do in waking life. I might have a different identity, but whatever it is, I'm "living" it. I've heard of people watching their dreams like they're movies, though. So I'm trying to understand the range of what people experience in dreams.

Thanks so much!

I'm glad that some of you took the time to answer my Dreams poll. It's fascinating that so many people experience dreams differently from what I'd ever imagined - and it's reassuring that I'm not a freak to have only first-person kinds of dreams.

I might want to include a question like this in some of my studies. If you think I should have phrased any of it a bit differently, please let me know.

And if you haven't done the poll yet, please do!
